Le jeune artiste florentin Franciabigio a partagé un atelier près du Palazzo della Signoria avec Andrea del Sarto d'environ 1506. Cette délicate tête fragmentaire de la Vierge s'appuie sur une peinture de del Sarto de la Vierge et de l'Enfant avec le Jeune Jean-Baptiste qui a probablement été peint vers 1508 et accroché dans la collection Giustiniani à Rome au XVIIe siècle. C'est une démonstration de la relation de travail étroite entre l'un des plus grands artistes florentins du XVIe siècle et ce peintre talentueux. Le cadre est du XVIIe siècle, probablement de Bologne.
