Ce tableau est apparu pour la première fois en 1900, quand il a été prêté à la grande exposition Goya à Madrid comme le pendentif d'un portrait du mari de la baby-sitter, Juan Bautista de Goicoechea y Urrutia. Juan Bautista a été nommé ministre de la Guerre à Ferdinand VII en 1815 et dans son portrait (maintenant dans la Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlesruhe) porte l'ordre de Charles III, reçu la même année. Il était apparemment proche de Gumersinda Goicoechea, qui a épousé le fils de Goya Javier en 1805. Notre portrait a peut-être été peint près de l'époque du mariage de Javier, mais a certainement été exécuté en 1815/16. Malgré la signature sur la bague – un dispositif préféré de Goya – l'attribution de ce portrait a récemment été remise en question par certaines autorités.
