Ce tableau a été inclus dans un ensemble de sept scènes commandées par le duc de Sobradiel Palace à Saragosse pour sa chapelle privée. Il montre le moment dans Matthieu 1:20 où l'ange Gabriel visite Saint Joseph pour lui dire qu'il devrait accepter la Vierge Marie comme sa femme sans hésiter. Pour la composition, Francisco Goya s'inspire des œuvres du peintre Simon Vouet (1540–1649), qu'il découvre par gravures de Michel Dorigny.
