Après 1900, Remington a produit une série évocatrice de nuits qui présentent l'obscurité comme un élément narratif essentiel. Rendu dans une palette muette de bleu, vert et brun, A Reconnaissance dépeint trois soldats de cavalerie et leurs chevaux dans un paysage couvert de neige. Un officier et un scout se sont aventurés à une crête pour observer une ligne distante d'arbres, en alerte à la possibilité de confrontation. En détournant les figures du spectateur, Remington crée une aura de mystère d'humeur et renforce le suspense d'un résultat incertain.
