La maturation du style Inness a un lien important avec les différents endroits où il vivait. En tant qu'artiste paysagiste c'était certainement vrai de la substance, mais dans son cas c'était vrai du style. Bien qu'il ait commencé sa carrière de disciple de l'École d'Hudson, ses voyages influeront sur le développement de son travail. Deux événements en particulier se distinguent. L'exposition qu'il reçut à l'école de Barbizon lors d'un de ses voyages en France dans les années 1850 et le temps qu'il passa à Raritan Bay. D'un point de vue technique et spirituel, ils ont changé la façon dont l'Inness voyait l'environnement naturel qui serait son sujet. Autres
