Louisa May Alcott a commencé à écrire comme une jeune enfant et a transformé son établissement en une carrière dans son adolescence quand son père, théoricien utopique Bronson Alcott, a quitté sa famille dans de terribles difficultés financières. En 1854, elle publia son premier livre, Flower Fables, pour soutenir sa famille. Elle a été infirmière pendant la guerre civile et ses mémoires Hospital Sketches ont été publiés en 1863. Interrogée par son éditeur pour écrire un livre pour les filles, Alcott s'est inspirée de ses propres expériences familiales pour écrire Little Women (1868). Ce roman réconfortant raconte la vie des quatre sœurs de mars – Meg, Jo, Beth et Amy – qui ont grandi pendant la guerre civile. Un succès lors de sa publication, Little Women reste un classique littéraire américain, sa popularité si engageante qu'il a été adapté plusieurs fois pour l'écran argenté et Broadway.
