Le 27 novembre 1776, Lady Derby s'est assis pour ce portrait. Elle retourna dix fois au studio de Romney à Londres pendant les hivers de 1777 et 1778. Elle avait vingt-trois ans avec un fils et était mariée depuis deux ans et demi. Le fond romantique et sa robe blanche sont typiques des portraits de femmes de Romney.
