Formé en Angleterre, John Fenwick a commencé sa carrière militaire comme lieutenant dans les Marines des États-Unis. Pendant la guerre de 1812, il fut blessé lors de la bataille de Queenstown Heights. Il obtient finalement la commission de Brevet-Brigadier-Général en 1823. Bien que Gilbert Stuart ne soit pas connu pour avoir travaillé à Charleston, il a été un favori parmi de nombreux Charlestoniens qui lui ont commandé des portraits pendant ses séjours à New York et plus tard Washington, D.C. Dramatiquement rendu, Stuart utilise un schéma de couleur intense pour représenter Fenwick
