Albert Gallaton (1761-1849) est né dans une famille suisse aristocratique à Genève. En 1780, il émigre aux États-Unis et s'installe en Pennsylvanie, où il lance sa carrière politique. En 1794, il est élu au premier de trois mandats à la Chambre des représentants, où il fonde le Comité des voies et moyens. En 1801, Thomas Jefferson nomme son secrétaire du Trésor. Il fut ambassadeur en France de 1816 à 1823, et en Grande-Bretagne de 1826 à 1827.
