Né à Dublin, William Kerin Constable (1752–1803) émigre en Amérique et s'installe à New York, où il s'engage dans le commerce international qui domine l'économie naissante de Baltimore. En 1784, il devient associé fondateur de la firme Constable, Rucke and Company, qui équipe le premier navire américain à commercer avec la Chine et l'Inde.
