Un sentiment de calme et d'expressivité ainsi que des effets légers sont remarquables dans cette toile, avec le beau casque et des pièces d'armure au premier plan. Pensé être le portrait de Gattamelata - un célèbre capitaine italien (1370-1443) - l'image a été attribuée à la dernière activité de Giorgione, morte en 1510, bien que l'attribution ne soit pas certaine puisque certains critiques l'ont référé à d'autres artistes comme Paolo Morando appelé il Cavazzola. Restauré en 1990
