Lorsque Bacchus arriva sur l'île de Naxos, il trouva la belle fille de Minos, Ariane, qui avait été abandonnée par Thésée. Bacchus l'a épousée et sa couronne a été transformée en constellation par Jupiter. Dans la photo actuelle Bacchus, portant des feuilles de vigne dans ses cheveux, place une bague sur le doigt d'Ariane. Le sujet a été traité par Pellegrini plusieurs fois. Le tableau actuel peut dater d'après 1721, après le retour de Pellegrini à Venise et son travail considérable en Angleterre, Düsseldorf, les Pays-Bas, et Paris.
