La scène traditionnelle de l'ange Gabriel annonçant la naissance de Jésus à Marie est rendue brillamment théâtrale. L'ange a volé dans Marie humble chambre de lit par une fenêtre ouverte accompagnée de la colombe de l'Esprit Saint; les nuages soufflent autour de lui; l'obturateur de la fenêtre s'ouvre vers le spectateur; et un rideau à droite est comme tiré en arrière pour révéler la scène. L'image peut être une œuvre indépendante ou une étude pour un retable. Les collectionneurs ont apprécié brushwork bravoura comme une transcription directe de la créativité de l'artiste.
