La peinture était autrefois dans une chapelle dans l'église de Sant'Apollinare, Venise. Après la suppression de l'église, la photo a été prise en France et coupée en deux. Les deux pièces ont été achetées par la famille Chiesa pour la Brera, la peinture a été restaurée à sa forme originale en 1950. Dans cette grande peinture, Tiepolo confronte le style de Piazzetta, et revient en même temps à des éléments des grands modèles vénitiens du Cinquecento, comme le Pala di San Zaccaria de Veronese.
