Le peintre italien Giovanni Paolo Panini (1691-1765) est célèbre pour sonCapricci, caprices architecturaux, caprices ou fantasmes, forgés à partir de l'imagination. Il a été enseigné l'art de la peinture illusionniste architecture par le deisgner de scène Francesco Galli-Bibiena, se déplaçant à Rome en 1711, où il a étudié la peinture figurative avec Benedetto Lutti. Il déménage ensuite au studio d'Andrea Locatelli. Il était courant pour un artiste de choisir de se spécialiser dans un domaine particulier; au XVIIe siècle par exemple, certains portraitistes employaient un spécialiste de la peinture de tissus et de costumes tout en obtenant un autre pour animer une image en peignant le paysage en arrière-plan.
