Raphael a complété ces travaux pour la Villa Farnesina, une villa de banlieue Renaissance à Rome en 1512. La Farnesina a été construite par l'un des hommes les plus riches de la Renaissance, Agostini Chigi, qui était un banquier. C'était la seule peinture de la mythologie grecque que Raphaël peignait, l'histoire de la Galatea de Nereid, qui était tombée amoureuse d'un berger paysan, Acis. Galatea, après avoir trouvé les deux amants dans une étreinte, a tué Acis en lui jetant un pilier géant. Bien que la peinture de Raphaël est basée sur l'histoire, elle n'illustre aucun des événements réels de l'histoire.
