Dans le style, l'échelle et la composition, cette œuvre ressemble fortement à la première scène de chasse de Courbet, The Quarry, un grand succès au Salon de 1857 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Boston). La toile actuelle se distingue par l'inclusion d'un serviteur vivant et d'un assortiment de gibiers morts : un sanglier, une perdrix, un cerf et un lièvre, tous présentés d'une manière rappelant la peinture flamande du XVIIe siècle. Un sportif passionné, Courbet a finalement consacré environ quatre-vingts images au sujet de la chasse.
