Ce portrait d'un homme non identifié, représenté dans un intérieur avec un paysage vu par la fenêtre ouverte à gauche, dérive finalement d'une composition développée par les premiers maîtres nétherlandais, à savoir Dieric Bouts dans son 1462 Portrait d'un homme (National Gallery, Londres). Daté 1491, il avance la formule en capturant le comportement auto-assuré de la baby-sitter, qui s'adresse directement au spectateur d'un coup d'œil latéral. La peinture a été attribuée à diverses écoles régionales allemandes, mais son analogie la plus proche se trouve dans les premiers portraits de Dürer, qui était actif à Nuremberg.
