L'un des deux sous-marins marchands allemands en état de blocus, Deutschland arrive pour la première fois aux États-Unis à Baltimore le 9 juillet 1916. Après avoir traversé l'Atlantique pratiquement vide, une partie de son ballast de fer a été utilisée pour créer des médailles commémoratives, comme celle-ci. buste à gauche; dans la courbe autour: U - DEUTSCHLAND.- PAUL KÖNIG KAPITÄN; 9 JULI/ 1916
