Tout au long de sa carrière, Ramsay s'est souvent servi de modèle - il y a en fait vingt autoportraits de pétrole enregistrés. Cette peinture est cependant considérée comme sa plus accomplie. Dans ce portrait de soi plein frontal de trois quarts de long, l'artiste, portant une veste blanche à haute pointe, se tient avec sa main gauche sur sa hanche et dans sa main droite baissée tient une brosse. Avec sa pose élégante à la main, elle s'inscrit dans la tradition du « portrait swagger » – une tradition qui avait ses origines dans la Renaissance mais qui était également évidente dans l'œuvre du célèbre portraitiste John Singer Sargent, un contemporain influent de Ramsay.
