Repin est né dans la ville rurale ukrainienne de Chuhuiv (Chuguev) quand il faisait partie de l'Empire russe. Il devint un peintre progressiste majeur. Fidèle aux principes réalistes, Repin dépeint ce garçon d'une manière simple et tendre sans être trop sentimental. Au début des années 1880, lors de la réalisation de l'image, l'artiste a peint un certain nombre de portraits d'enfants, y compris des parents de ses mécènes et de ses propres filles et fils. La baby-sitter de ce travail, cependant, n'a pas été identifiée.
