L'aspect le plus frappant de cette image est le paysage fabuleux sur la droite, qui semble être seulement partiellement inventé. La provenance veronoise de l'oeuvre suggère la théorie intéressante qu'il a été peint pour le couvent de Saint Jérôme au théâtre romain. Les caractéristiques topographiques de Vérone regagnent ici, bien que sous forme altérée: la rivière, les ruines, le double escalier coupé dans la tufa, l'église et le couvent. L'inspiration principale de Bartolomeo semble provenir d'une réalité qu'il est revenu à un état de nature, convertissant le paysage urbain qu'il connaissait dans un paysage rustique.
