Jan Brueghel le Jeune faisait partie d'une dynastie artistique qui a transformé le paysage flamand, le genre et la peinture morte. Jan the Younger prend le relais de son père Jan the Elder en 1625 et apprend de sa pratique à animer les arrangements floraux avec les insectes et les fleurs tombées. Le papillon perché au sommet du panier ajoute encore plus de vivacité à la composition et peut avoir des associations symboliques avec l'âme et la résurrection.
