Ingres a fait de cette petite peinture de dévotion comme un bijou un cadeau pour son amie Louise Marcotte; elle a présenté l'artiste à Delphine Ramel, qu'il a épousée en 1852. La Vierge apparaît derrière une table d'autel, flanquée de deux saints dans l'adoration de l'Eucharistie. La composition rend hommage à la longue tradition de peintures intimes faites pour la dévotion religieuse, en particulier l'art de Raphaël du début des années 1500.
