Dans 1828 corot est revenu d'italie en france et a peint la cathédrale de chartres en 1830 . son cadrage et sa luminosité très originaux font suite à ses expériences en italie . L'artiste a retravaillé ce tableau en 1872 . La peinture ( 64 x 51 cm ) est maintenant dans la collection du musée du louvre , Paris .
