Cette œuvre était autrefois considérée comme un portrait de la peintre Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899) enfant, mais elle semble représenter un garçon. Les portraits de Corot étaient limités aux amis et aux membres de sa famille, mais jusqu'à présent la figure reste inconnue.
