Ce petit panneau, probablement fait dans les années 1860, était évidemment bien connu et admiré dans le cercle d'amis de Corot. Constant Dutilleux (1807–1865) et Charles Desavary (1837–1885), deux peintres vivant à Arras, une ville du nord de la France que Corot visite souvent, copient le tableau. À propos 1873 Corot le donna à son patron Cléophas, qui lui avait fourni un atelier supplémentaire où il pouvait travailler sans être perturbé.
