Millet a d'abord traité ce sujet dans une coupe sur bois, l'un des dix ouvrages de la série Labors of the Fields publiés dans un périodique populaire en 1853. Le marchand d'art Martinet, dans sa galerie d'artistes d'avant-garde tels que Courbet et Manet exposés, a inclus cette peinture dans un spectacle en 1860.
