Le titre turc de Gérôme pour cette photo, qui se traduit par « sans tête », évoque les soldats auxiliaires mal payés qui ont combattu férocement pour pillage sous la direction ottomane. Pour la créer, l'artiste a posé un modèle dans son atelier parisien portant des vêtements et des accessoires qu'il avait acquis à l'étranger. Peu après son achèvement, le travail actuel fut acquis par John Taylor Johnston (1820-1893), premier président du Metropolitan Museum.
