Blanche Selwyn a commencé sa carrière dans le vaudeville britannique, mais a rapidement migré aux États-Unis où elle a connu un grand succès en tant qu'impersonateur masculin. En 1873, Selwyn épousa son deuxième mari et associé d'affaires, Ben Gilfoil. À la fin des années 1870, Selwyn possédait et gérait sa propre entreprise de variétés. Les audiences aimaient Gilfoil, parodie de Selwyn, imitation masculine. Contrairement aux Blondes britanniques, les imitateurs masculins comme Selwyn ont reçu peu de critiques négatives. L'Amérique se réjouit de cette forme de travestisme.
