À l'âge de dix-sept ans, la famille Torres-García est revenue en Catalogne, en Espagne, où il a commencé à étudier la peinture, et a même travaillé avec Gaudi sur les cathédrales de la Sagrada Familia et Palma de Majorque. En 1904, il publie un article dans le magazine Universitat Catalana qui déclare que l'art ne doit jamais copier la réalité, révélant son concept idéalisé de l'art. En 1910, il organise le pavillon uruguayen à l'Exposition mondiale, et finit par retourner dans son pays natal.
