La peinture majestueuse, divisée en trois panneaux qui se chevauchaient, était initialement accrochée au-dessus du sépulcre de marbre que Ulrich von Liechtenstein, prince évêque de Trente, avait commandé pour lui-même dans la cathédrale en 1504, un an avant sa mort. L'œuvre, précédemment attribuée à Dürer et à Giacomo da Vicenza, fut attribuée plus tard à un artiste anonyme, probablement originaire du Nord, influencé par la peinture de la Renaissance italienne de la région Vénétie.
