Cette peinture est l'un des plus beaux d'un groupe de portraits ambitieusement composés peints pendant la période vénitienne principale de Lotto, dans les années qui suivent son retour de Bergame. Le travail central du groupe est le portrait d'Andrea Odoni (1527), d'autres exemples majeurs incluent l'homme avec une patte d'or (c. 1527) et le portrait d'une dame comme Lucretia (1530-32). Tous ces portraits partagent les caractéristiques d'un format large (plutôt que vertical), d'une pose de trois quarts de longueur et d'un environnement circonstancié rempli d'objets qui semblent porter une signification symbolique.
