Les fils du banquier de Hambourg Martin Anton Hecksher examinent un plan de l'école Schnepenthal, fondée à Gotha en 1787 et considérée comme l'une des plus progressistes d'Allemagne. Tischbein était au cœur de la riche culture intellectuelle du romantisme allemand, et il dépeint les jeunes étudiants dans un cadre naturel favorable aux réformes éducatives des Lumières qui ont balayé l'Europe et encouragé une nouvelle vision de l'enfance. Descendé d'une importante famille juive ashkénaze, sous la pression de l'antisémitisme répandu affectant les affaires et la vie sociale, leur père supervisa les garçons en 1808 avant sa propre conversion en 1815.
