Au moment où ce croquis fut peint, Olevano Romano, une ville de colline à l'est de Rome, était associé à l'artiste allemand Joseph Anton Koch et ses disciples, Faber parmi eux. La ville a maintenu une communauté prospère d'artistes de toute l'Europe, en faisant une destination cosmopolite malgré son cadre rustique. Caractéristique des croquis d'artistes allemands, une partie de cette composition reste nettement inachevée.
