Johann Moritz Rugendas (Augsburg, 1802 - Weilheim, 1858) est un peintre, dessinateur et graveur. Embauché comme dessinateur d'expédition et fabricant de documentaires pour l'expédition brésilienne du baron de Langsdorff, il arrive au Brésil en 1822 et ne participe à l'expédition qu'en 1824. Entre 1825 et 1828, il vécut à Paris, à Augsbourg et à Munich, se consacrant à l'organisation et à la publication de son œuvre. Ce carnet de voyage, adressé au grand public, a réuni 22 lithographes et Victor Aimé Huberna pour la préparation des textes.
