Comme Thomaskantor Bach a exécuté une cantate chaque dimanche dans les églises de Leipzig. Il a composé la plupart des pièces lui-même, étant soutenu dans la production et dans les répétitions par des musiciens Thomas expérimentés. L'examen des manuscrits du Thomaner nous aide aujourd'hui à dater l'origine de Bach.
