Trois membres sont considérés comme l’un des plus beaux tableaux de John F. Herring Sr.. Le titre se réfère aux chevaux qui boivent dans un approvisionnement en eau, l'eau étant la boisson préférée du mouvement Temperance. Les versions de ce tableau ont été attribuées à John Arnold Wheeler, C.H. Thompson, M. Gouge, Thomas Landseer et Alexander Hay Ritchie, qui ont gravé cette version.
