Comme beaucoup d'œuvres de Peto, cette toile porte la fausse signature de son contemporain William Michael Harnett. En 1886, Harnett avait peint avec succès une image de trompe-l'oeil, appelée "The Old Violin" (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), reproduite dans un chromolithograph l'année suivante. Peto peut avoir connu l'original ou l'impression. Bien qu'il ait emprunté la composition de Harnett, il en a fait quelque chose de très différent. En aplatissant les formes et en ignorant la modélisation, il a créé un motif décoratif avec un effet textural qui est évocateur plutôt que purement illusionniste.
