Jeremiah Platt (1744–1811) était un homme d'affaires de New York, associé de son beau-frère Samuel Broome dans la société commerciale de Broome, Platt and Company. Mare, un portraitiste de New York peu connu mais hautement qualifié, a peint un portrait inventif et raffiné de Platt, avec autant d'attention portée à la chaise latérale de style Chippendale que la baby-sitter.
