En 1800, Robert Shurlock (1772–1847) épousa la fille de John Russell, Henrietta Ann Jane Russell (1775–1849), près de la maison de l'artiste à Guildford, Surrey. Ce pastel a probablement été achevé peu après le mariage, et le portrait compagnon d'Henrietta avec le premier enfant couple est également dans cette galerie. Ici, M. Shurlock est un homme en fuite à la hauteur de sa jeunesse, portant une écharpe en soie et un manteau double-bras avec des boutons en laiton. L'artiste a réalisé plusieurs autres portraits pour sa fille, tous datant de 1801.
