Les premières aquarelles de Sargent dans la collection du Musée datent de 1865–1868, date à laquelle l'artiste avait environ dix ans. Dès l'enfance, l'aquarelle lui a offert un médium polyvalent avec lequel enregistrer les gens et les lieux qui ont capté son attention. Bien que l'inscription sur le Verso, qui n'est pas à la main de Sargent, suggère que cette aquarelle audacieuse a été peinte à Purtud, au nord de Courmayeur, en Italie, le site pourrait bien être l'une des autres régions alpines visitées par l'artiste après 1900.
