Hylas et les nymphes ( 1896 ) est une peinture à l'huile par les anglais Pre-Raphaelite peintre john william waterhouse . quand le bateau des argonautes a atteint l île de cios , Hylas , le compagnon jeune et beau d hercule , a été envoyé à terre à la recherche de l eau . Il a découvert une fontaine , mais les nymphes de la place ont été tellement enchanté par sa beauté qu ils lui ont tiré dans les profondeurs de leur demeure liquide , et en dépit des cris d hercule qui ont rendu les rives résonnent avec le nom hylas , le jeune homme n a jamais été revu .
