Lambert Sigisbert Adam (1710-1771) schuf diese Marmorkopie nach dem Ares Ludovisi 1730 als Dankesgeschenk an König Ludwig XV. von Frankreich (1710-1774) für das mit dem Grand Prix de Sculpture von 1723 einhergehende Stipendium, das ihm einen mehrjährigen Studienaufenthalt in Rom ermöglichte. C'est la première fois qu'il s'agit d'un problème. 4. Jahrhunderts c. Chr. fogenden römischen Kopie im Thermenmuseum in Rom. Zusammen mit vier weiteren Skulpturen gelangte die Skulptur 1750 als Geschenk des französischen Königs an Friedrich II. von Preußen, der sie im Vestibül von Schloss Sanssouci aufstellen ließ.
