Lan Ying, également connu sous son nom de courtoisie Tianshu et les noms littéraires Diesou et Shitoutuo, est né à Qiantang, dans la province du Zhejiang. C'était un peintre habile. Son style a été élégant et lisse pendant ses premières années, libre, grand, particulier, et peu sophistiqué à son âge moyen après qu'il a voyagé largement dans le pays, et vigoureux, robuste mais légèrement voyant pendant ses jours supérieurs. Lan était aussi doué pour peindre des figures, des fleurs, des oiseaux, des orchidées et des bambous. Il a été un important exposant de l'école de peinture de Wulinpai.
