Un autel sculpté élaboré a été commandé par la Confraternité Milanaise de l'Immaculée Conception pour leur oratoire à San Francesco en 1480. Un nouveau contrat a été conclu en 1483 avec Leonardo et les frères de Predis: un panneau central devait être peint par Leonardo seul, et il y avait deux panneaux latéraux montrant des anges chantant et jouant des instruments de musique. Deux tableaux d'anges (un ange en vert avec une vielle et un ange en rouge avec une luth) d'artistes influencés par Leonardo, sont sans doute ceux pour le retable.
