Ce n'est qu'après avoir échoué dans sa poursuite d'une carrière gouvernementale que Li Fangying s'est consacré à la peinture comme moyen de survie. Son amour de la prune fleurie était tel qu'il nomma son atelier la Tour de la prune Blossom; c'est là, en 1743, qu'il peignit cette image de sa fleur préférée avec du bambou et un rocher. Pour Li et les érudits ratés comme lui, la fleur de prune qui fleurit malgré le froid hivernal a fourni un modèle puissant de persévérance.
