Ce dessin rapide et tendre d'un sujet âgé est une œuvre caractéristique de l'artiste génoise Luca Cambiaso (souvent appelée Cambiasi) (1527-1585). Un épisode célèbre raconte que son patron, le roi Philippe II d'Espagne, s'étonne de Cambiaso.
