L'image date d'environ 1360–1365, quand Luca di Tomme est connue pour avoir collaboré avec le miniaturiste, Niccolò di Ser Sozzo. C'était sa période la plus inventive et la présente image, le panneau central d'un retable non identifié, est l'une de ses œuvres les plus distinguées. Bien qu'il n'y ait pas de pertes importantes, le caractère de l'image a été grandement compromis par un aplatissement dû à son transfert et à son nettoyage rigoureux.
