Giordano fut le peintre le plus connu à Naples à la fin du XVIIe siècle et l'un des artistes italiens les plus recherchés de l'époque. Il a travaillé dans une variété de styles, imitant souvent les maîtres de la Renaissance. Ce retable a été peint après un voyage à Venise, et rend hommage direct à l'œuvre de Titien.
